Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, has stated in the lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games that the existing security level in iOS is much higher than in macOS. That right now it is difficult for Apple to reach the security barrier that the iPhone has imposed, for example, with respect to the Mac. Blame it on third-party apps.
At the trial of Apple vs. Epic Games that is taking place these days, we are seeing very interesting statements from the witnesses who are present in the Court. On the last day of sessions, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple. The latter has informed the Court that it would not be a good idea for other devices to have the same ability to download third-party applications that the Mac has.
Basically, the security system that Mac have does not reach anywhere near the security imposed on devices with iOS. For Macs, having macOS and being intended for the free configuration of users, it is not a good idea to create a store where all applications are reviewed by members of Apple. It would neither be a good idea nor would it be efficient. That is why many users can download third-party applications without going through the control of the apple company.
What does this mean?. Basically, it cannot be guaranteed that when you download applications outside of the Mac App Store, they are not infected with any Malware. The level of security in place right now for Craig Federighi, on Macs is not acceptable. However, mobile applications are more attractive to criminals, so the level of security must be much higher. That is why you should not outsource the applications on iOS. But it is acceptable on macOS.
