Western Digital hard drives and their problem updating to Mavericks

wd-mavericks

A problem / bug is on the lips of all users who have a Western Digital company hard drive connected to the Mac. This can become a serious problem for those users who store important data on these external drives of the brand that for ' magic art ' all data is erased The disk containing storage at the time of upgrading to OS X 10.9 Mavericks operating system.

Undoubtedly a serious problem that affects many users and that apparently will have a solution, but just in case you are one of those affected by this involuntary formatting, we recommend the following:

The first and most important thing is to stay calm (difficult when you lose important data) since Western Digital is already working on solving the problem and although it can be difficult to recover the data through a patch, you never know. The next thing you can do is try to recover lost information with tools like Data Recovery 3, turn off and disconnect the disk until a solution to the problem can be given from the company itself.

For its part, Western Digital is sending this email to users (translated with the translator) who use company applications for disk management such as WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare as they may be the cause of the problem:

As a valued WD customer we want to inform you about new reports from WD and some external hard drives experiencing data loss when upgrading to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10,9).

WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD SmartWare, and WD RAID Manager software applications. Until the issue is resolved and the cause is identified, WD strongly encourages our customers to uninstall these software applications before upgrading to OS X Mavericks (10,9), or delaying the upgrade. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, we recommend that you uninstall these applications and restart your computer.

The WD Drive Manager, WD RAID Manager, and WD SmartWare applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years, however, just as a precautionary measure, WD has removed these applications from its website while investigating this matter.

In the event that you want to update your Mac and use any of these applications, we recommend that you follow the recommendation that the company is sending to its users.

very good in relation to this device I currently have mine connected to the airport extreme, of course it has not given me any failure having OS X Mavericks, what I have done is completely erase the external device, passing all the info that I had in it to another mac and then erase completely and then pass all the info that it had from the other mac to the device configuring in disk drives erase and give it permission as when we are going to erase the disk and put the system as new, you have to give them the corresponding permissions…. and so far so good.

Thanks for the contribution none, the way is to save the info in another site and if possible remove the WD applications.

Anyway, if the problem is known in advance nothing happens, the 'screwed up' is that you update without knowing the problem.

      regards

It is important to know that you want to have it again as long as you have the information, it is important to have it in place as you say, that is why you have to see the post and above all follow soydemac to be updated... Another greeting to you Jodi….. And to the entire team.

But there is something that is not clear to me. If I pass information directly, that is, connecting the hard drive, copying and pasting without ever having any WD application installed, could I lose data or is the problem for who uses the WD programs? Thank you very much

Hi Djared, it seems that the problem is found by users who updated Mavericks with any of the WD applications installed on the Mac.

The best thing in the case that you want to update your Mac to the new OS X Mavericks and you have a WD external disk is to make a backup copy just in case even if you do not have these WD applications installed (if you have them installed, better delete them as recommended by WD itself ).

Once updated to Mavericks you check that everything is fine on your WD and you can delete the backup if you want.

      A greeting.

First of all, I thank you for the answer. I have never used this type of application, I only connect the hard disk and copy, because it seems to me the most reliable way.

When I updated to Mavericks what I did is do a clean update and connect the hard drives without installing any type of application. The truth is that I have not missed anything on the hard drives, but I was afraid that in the future if I could lose something, but hey with what you tell me and I have read online, it seems that you have to meet both requirements What are you aiming for, on the one hand, directly update the OS (not a clean update) and have any of the WD applications installed.

I hope they solve it quickly because I think it is an incredible task. In my case I have 4 WD hard drives of 2TB each and if I lost my backups from more than 6 years ago it would be an incalculable loss.

Thank you very much again for keeping us informed and answering the comments 😀
