A few hours ago the guys from Cupertino have released a new macOS update, number 10.12.4, with one of the novelties that many users were waiting for: the Night Shift function, a function that allows us to modify the colors of the screen to adjust them to the ambient light. This function is also available for iOS devices, but as always with limitations, since it only works with devices with a 64-bit processor.
In theory this feature should work without any problem on most Mac compatible with macOS Sierra, since they are all 64-bit, but unfortunately it is not. It seems that again the guys at Apple want users with older but fully functional devices, are forced to renew their devices if they want to make use of the latest features that it adds to macOS.
This limitation has nothing to do with the type of screen of the devices, as it works perfectly on Dell monitors, so it is not only compatible with devices manufactured and designed by Apple. Apparently, and according to some threads of Pike R. Alta, this limitation is related to the macOS Metal API, so that only all Macs that are compatible with Metal have the Night Shift function available to activate it, as with iOS devices.
If you do not know if your device is compatible with Metal, then we will show you a List of Macs that are compatible with Metal and therefore compatible with the Night Shift function. As we can see, Apple seems to have the date to the year 2012, so all devices manufactured on that date or later are fully compatible with this function.
- iMac13,x : mid 2012 or later.
- MacBookPro9,x : mid 2012 or later.
- macmini6,x : late 2012 or later.
- MacBook Air5,x : mid 2012 or later.
- MacPro6,x : end of 2013.
- MacBook8,x : early 2015 or early 2016.
Not everyone is willing to renew their device for the simple fact that fewer and fewer functions are not compatible with it. Thanks to both the developer community and third-party apps, we can find a solution for every problem that Apple presents us. If you are among the users who cannot activate Night Shift on their Mac, f.lux is the solution, a free application that performs practically the same functions as the main novelty of macOS 10.12.4.
I am increasingly disappointed by the decisions we make Apple, they do not see that many of us are already tired of their marginalization.
No wonder I could not find it, I have a macbook pro late 2011 and for the date it works perfect, not for a stupid function would I renew my Mac ☺️
I had to install flux and I think it is more configurable :)
whoever does not find it has to go to the eye doctor. it is within the screen settings ...
Flux a good alternative and works on old macs
This is a tool that activates it https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-10-12-sierra-unsupported-macs-thread.1977128/page-181#post-24439821
