Your Mac more secure with a firmware password

TEAM_LOCKED

Today we are going to explain to you a somewhat dangerous process depending on how you look at it. If you are a person aware of the codes you use and you know that you will not forget them, this is a post that will not leave you unmoved.

For all those users who need a 100% security on your computer, we explain how to create a key in the firmware of the computer.

Normally, users have a password at the beginning of the OSX session, which at the same time as the gateway to the system is used for the installation of applications, since the system will always ask you to insert it to begin the installation of applications that are not within the Mac App Store, since otherwise the key that you must put is those of the Apple ID.

The fact is that there are ways to be able to bypass the security of the systems, and if a person with bad intentions, with physical access to your Mac, wants to get to your data, simply by booting in a different mode, such as recovery mode, mode single user or verbose mode you can do whatever you want. Others try to boot Macs using a USB drive and thus bypass the password.

With what we have indicated previously we want to tell you that there is the possibility of entering the system in other ways. To avoid these situations and keep the contents of your Mac 100% safe, what we are going to teach you to do is to introduce a second level of security through a password in the computer's firmware, so that if someone tries to start the computer from a different way than usual, it also asks for a password.

The process is quite easy to do. To do this, restart your Mac and hold down the key Cmd+R. This will put your Mac in recovery mode, which is the way it exists when we have to enter the system in case of disaster or file corruption.

UTILITY PASSWORD FIRMAWARE

Once you start in this mode, we click on the Tools menu at the top of the screen and select Firmware Password Utility. Once we press, a window will appear informing the user that the firmware password is disabled.

ACTIVATE PASSWORD

The next step is to activate the password and enter the desired password, of course, it goes without saying that we should not put the same password as the login password since then this process would not be of any use.

ENTER PASSWORD

Once the password has been entered, we click on the "Set password" button, we return to the top menu of the screen and we give it to restart.

Now you have activated the password in the firmware and the way you have to see it is to start the equipment in one of those modes in which it is supposed to ask for it.

Needless to say, if you forget the password you have a serious problem, because then you will have to visit a technical service.

Why can't I put the same password as the login one?

And another question, I have noticed that there are programs through USB ports such as EFI that unlocks the 4 digits of a mac blocked by icloud. My question is, if you block a mac by icloud, the one that has stolen it cannot connect to the Internet because it is precisely blocked, then the device cannot be tracked ... also, with the EFI tool, it would unlock the icloud lock and could enter and delete your account. It would not be better not to block it by icloud and leave your user account with a password and a guest account with limited restrictions, but with the Internet so that when you connect you can track it by icloud and from the guest account you cannot modify anything since it does not have administrative permissions and if you try to format by recovery or an external usb will you need the firmware password, right?

I await an answer, thank you very much and very kind for your time.
