Apple admits that the life cycle of an iPhone is three years

Much has been said about planned obsolescence, but no manufacturer has admitted it, so far, by Apple, on the occasion of Earth Day which It will be held on April 22, to announce what is the Lifecycle iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Life cycle, up for debate

You have probably already been alarmed, but don't worry, it's not that bad, you'll see. On the occasion of Earth Day and Campaign that Apple, in collaboration with many developers and with WWF is carrying out, has also published a kind of guide in which it informs users about different data about the environment and how the company helps to care for it, but among this information, the one that has drawn the attention is the one related to the device life cycle.

iphone life cycle

Apple has admitted that the life cycle of the iPhone is three yearsWhile the life cycle of a Mac is four years. The company has reached this conclusion by measuring different aspects such as the estimated power consumed by each product, the average time of use, and so on.

To model customer usage, we measure the power consumed by a product while it is running in a simulated scenario. Daily usage patterns are specific to each product and are a mix of actual and modeled customer usage data. Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for OS X and TVOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices.

Does this mean that after three years your iPhone will suddenly stop working? No, far from it. When we talk about Lifecycle of a device, in this case an iPhone, an iPad or a Mac, we actually refer to the estimated time during which said device will work without the need for any modification or repair by the user, as long as, obviously, it is intended for normal use, that is, do not put it in the microwave to see if it resists or throw it on the asphalt from the fifth floor.

After this period, the device is much more likely to require some repair, replacement of a component, and so on.

Now this is not an excuse. Apple does great efforts for caring for the environment, we have no doubt about that, but still, this Lifecycle It is a bit scarce for us, but also far superior to much of the competition.

Do you think Apple should stretch the life cycle of its devices? Can Apple do more than it does for the environment?

Mac minis reach 10 years perfectly, the vast majority and with rational use, those from 2015 still work without any modification.

At home we have an IPad 1 that, although it has an old IOS, works perfectly, as well as two IPhone 3GS ready to reuse. Except for one that got wet and had to be repaired, they have never dared for technical service. I also have an iPad 2 that I just updated. I think everyone is over 3 years old. Oh, and a 2009 iMac that plays pretty well with the Captain.

I have an iPhone 5s, an iPad 2 and lastly I have the 27 5K iMac. The iPad already lacks panache, okay, but the iPhone and iMac can throw more years still.
