Change the font size of subtitles for video playback in OS X

NOW I READ BETTER

When making use of the subtitles In OSX, you may find yourself in the situation that you are not able to read them, either due to visual problems or because the screen where you are playing the video is very small.

Surely if you send the image signal to a large television, you will not have a major problem with reading the subtitles, but in the case that you are watching the content on an eleven-inch MacBook Air, things change.

Today we are going to explain how to solve the problem of having a small font size in the subtitles that appear with your videos in their original version. Fortunately, OS X provides a large number of parameters for customizing subtitles, which will allow us to change the font type, shadows, colors and perhaps most importantly, the actual size of the subtitle text.

As we have indicated before, we are going to focus on the latter, since the size of the text is generally what matters most in terms of the legibility of the subtitles. To configure the subtitles to our liking we will follow the following steps:

  • We open System preferences and click on the section Accessibility.
  • In the left column we go down and look for the option of "Optional subtitles".

TYPES SUBTITLES

  • Upon entering that option, you will see how the window on the right shows you the existing subtitle profiles. By clicking on each of them, you will see how a preview of what that type of subtitle would look like. As you may have seen, the maximum size is called "Large text".
  • We are going to create a new subtitle profile, for which you just have to click on the lower "+" button and select each and every one of the characteristics that you want the subtitle to have. Keep in mind that in the font size you will be able to select another size, the "Extra big", so you can increase the size of the text and with them the readability.

EXTRA LARGE LETTER

Now you just have to try this new subtitle profile and enjoy your movies in their original version without having headaches from staring so hard to read such small print.
