Failure when trying to format an external disk in macOS

The exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) format is the evolution of FAT32 and was created by Microsoft. This format is compatible with Apple computers from Snow Leopard onwards but there are important differences with respect to the previous version, such as the maximum file size that in exFAT is 16GB.

Without a doubt this Is the best option If the user wants to use a pendrive or external disk on computers with Windows or macOS. Now today I tried make a format of an external disk to exFAT and I have run into glitches while performing the action.

I have been using this format for a long time on external drives as well as on pendrives to be able to use them both on Windows computers and on my Mac. I had never had problems formatting them to exFAT format until today, after trying again and again format the external drive, the macOS system kept giving me an error, not being able to assign this format to the new drive.

After trying several times I gave up and what I did was format it macOS plus (with registry). After an hour I tried to format exFAT and BOOM again, the system managed to format it correctly and without generating any error. Therefore, if you have suffered this type of error, the steps you have to follow are:

  • Format the external drive with the macOS plus file system (Journaled).
  • Then choose the exFAT format and repeat the deletion process.

I have not yet found a logical answer to this failure but what I have achieved after trying several times is the procedure that I have commented in this article. I will continue investigating in Apple forums to see if there are more users who are suffering this same failure in the new macOS. Have you suffered this failure?

The same thing happens to me. you try to format and the first try is wrong. I always have to do it in several tries. But the worst of all is that many times it has happened to me that when formatting EXFAT to use it on an external PC, it has not worked for me. I have the impression that it is an operating system problem.

Something similar happened to me with a PenDrive and not even giving it mac Os Plus format would solve it, I ended up diving through the internet to find the solution, which was through a terminal command ..., I don't remember more ....

    Hello,
I bought a Samsung SSD EVO 850 disk and I formatted it without problems.
I think it was formatted in FAT32.
I have it as an external disk with a casing, and copying data, at the moment without problems.
    A greeting.

I suffer the failure, if you let me format it, it doesn't give me an error, but when I put that pen with EXFAT format in Windows, windows tells me that the drive is not formatted. I'll try that and see if Windows will catch me.

We are in the same. I have tried a thousand ways and in all cases my LEEF usb does not recognize me on the iPad or the iPhone 6

Hello, thank you for your recommendation. Like others I have suffered with this problem, I needed to pass an ISO to a computer and I could not get the pendrive to be read in Windows.
Before you did not have this problem that I also consider is OS, I assumed it was because of the beta version that I use. I hope they solve it because if not, the simple I have intuitive of the operating system ceases to be.

The same thing happens to me, I try to format it with any system and the first one it won't let me, if I try the second if it lets me, I thought it was my fault but seeing that it happens to more people I stay calmer, it will be a operating system failure.

Exactly the same thing happens to me, and a user of a forum I have read that the same thing happens:

As such I have no problem formatting. I have a problem after giving the format, in a few words it gives the format and I use it for one day and the next day after restarting my Mac it does not recognize the USB asking to format it again. After seeing this problem, I preferred to stay in the macOS plus file system (with registry). I must inform that it is a 2terabites USB memory

With macOS Catalina system, I have repeatedly tried to format ExFAT with Master Boot Record (MBR) to a 5TB WD external drive for Mac and it always gives me the following error:

«Deleting“ WD My Passport 2629 Media ”(disk2) and creating“ Untitled ”

The given partition scheme is not supported by the disk because the disk is too large .: (-69659)

    Operation failed ... »

The truth is that I no longer know what to do, because I bought the disc to use it on Mac and PC. Does anyone have any other solutions? Thank you.

      I answer to myself.

Well, my desperation has led me to test the external disk, despite the repeated failure that ends as "Operation failed ...", on a PC. And what has been my surprise when verifying that it reads it perfectly as ExFAT format, I cannot explain how after always giving the error, it does work on the PC.

      Anyway, at least it works.

I just bought a 5Gb Samsung X500 SSD. After trying to format Mac OS (with registry) I got an error and the fact is that now the iMac does not recognize the disk so I cannot access it. Does anyone know how I can fix it? Thank you.

    SOLVED
Open the «terminal» (Launchpad -> others -> terminal)
Copy and paste in terminal: diskutil list
    Give enter (obviously)
Locating the usb to be formatted is normally the last but it can be as disk2 or disk3
Type in terminal: diskutil unmountDisk force disk3
(Remember if your usb is in disk2, change this last number 3 to 2)
    Give enter (obviously)
    Then copy paste in terminal: sudo dd if = / dev / zero of = / dev / disk3 bs = 1024 count = 1024
    Give enter (obviously)
It will ask you for the password of your mac, you write it and give enter.
Wait and go, close terminal and open "disk utilities" (Launchpad -> disk utilities)
On the left side will appear the disks on your mac (macintosh HD, usb ... etc.)
You click on your formatted USB, (it will be without data), above you give it delete, and select your name for the usb, in format you choose Exfat and in scheme you choose Master boot record (so that it works on mac and windows intel and AMD)
Then you click on Delete, wait a second and the deletion process will be completed and READY.
You can use your usb on Mac and Windows.
