macOS Catalina also has problems with some eGPUs

macos catalina

There are few problems that macOS Catalina has been generating since its arrival on our Macs. Nothing ago we told you about the problem of the Mail application. Now the penultimate inconvenience comes to light of the new update (penultimate, because at the rate we are going it is likely that tomorrow we will meet a new one). Some eGPU models are incompatible.

A few users have already mentioned in forums and social networks that with macOS Catalina your eGPU is failing, not even allowing you to turn on the screen to which they are connected.

Now the macOS Catalina problem is with some eGPUs, tomorrow who knows.

The issue that is being mentioned with macOS Catalina incompatibility has one factor in common. Everyone whose eGPUs are having trouble with the new software, they have it installed on their Mac mini.

That stands out problems with AMD Radeon 570 and Radeon 580 series cards, and all of them included in a Mac mini. But the most curious thing about some comments we have read is that even eSonnet GPU supplied with Apple's own developer kit is affected.

Some eGPUs, especially AMD Radeon 570 and 580 models, are causing problems with macOS Catalina

The biggest problem which is being reported is to be able to turn on the computer with an external screen connected through an eGPU. There are also constant reboots and occasional freezes intermittently.

We might think that with the update to macOS Catalina, these eGPUs could have stopped being supported by Apple. But there is no official information coming from the company, so we have to think that they are still usable and fully functional.

The big problem is that the users who are affected cannot solve the problem on their own. They have to wait for Apple to solve the many problems that are occurring. It's a shame, but we insist again that it is better not to update until a patch is released correcting all the problems or that the beta that is already underway, comes out soon.

I have a Mac mini from 2018, with a Sonnet eGPU and a Vega 56 and I have a monitor and a Wacom ciniq connected. The only thing I notice is that the ciintiq (main monitor) I have to turn on when I have already loaded the system, because neither no, it does not look correctly (it remains black). But this happened to me exactly the same with the previous system. I'm not amused, but it's nothing serious
