Microsoft has activated the IMAP protocol

IMAP OUTLOOK

We go back in time more or less a year and we place ourselves in the moment when Microsoft unveiled its new Outlook email service. If you used to use Microsoft mail, you will know that previously there was only the service of Hotmail, which has subsequently been considerably improved with Outlook.

The two systems were released to be compatible with the POP protocol, so all users who wanted to use the new IMAP protocol with their email accounts could not.

The first thing we are going to tell you about is what the new IMAP protocol is and how it differs from POP. IMAP is a protocol that arises to improve the old protocol POP3 which is the one that has been used for years. The IMAP protocol allows us to directly access our mail server without having to download all the messages on all the devices we have, which reduces the time we waste deleting the emails from all the devices once we read them. As you know, at the moment, when we receive an email, it enters the iPhone, iPad, Mac at the same time. If you open it on the Mac, when you go to the iPad there you have it again and equally on the iPhone.

Microsoft has given the arm to twist by the insistence of years of users and has finally activated the IMAP protocol, so that Mac and iDevices users will be able to configure their Hotmail and Outlook accounts with the IMAP protocol. However, to be able to do it well, we have to tell you a little trick, since if you try to configure the account in Mail, automatically when it consults with Microsoft's servers it is automatically configured as POP. So that this does not happen, what you must do is ENTER THE WRONG PASSWORD, so that in the second step of the wizard, you will be allowed in the drop-down menu to change POP to IMAP and manually configure the account with these data:

IMAP Input

  • Server: imap-mail.outlook.com
  • Server port: 993
  • Encryption: SSL

SMTP Outgoing mail

  • Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
  • Server ports: 587
  • Encryption: SSL
  • Authentication: Password

IMAP MAIL DETAIL

By default, when re-configuring the account to IMAP, the data is updated correctly when connecting to the Microsoft server, but if you have a problem, the data provided by Microsoft is the above.

Great news! If we have a hotmail account, are the parameters the same? That is, do you have to change outlook for hotmail or windows live? It is that I configure it like this and it costs him to send the emails and to receive he does not receive any ...

    Thank you.

    All the best

We are verifying everything, because sometimes it is causing problems in sending emails. We have to bear in mind that in iOS 7 this problem will disappear as long as it will not take the POP protocol by default so we will not have to cheat the system by putting the wrong password.

Thank you for your answer, but all this will be used for hotmail or only for an outlook account? I don't know if you have responded to that or to my problem that I do not receive emails.

        Thank you

Well, it does not connect to me, I have changed the outgoing and incoming server, but nothing, is it because my account is hotmail and not outlook?
