Will our Macs work on the APFS system soon?

Apple File System for Apple in 2017

One of the news that Mac OS Sierra brought us was the incorporation of a new format on hard drives, as we could see in a previous tutorial. It was the beginning of the end for the native Apple system, HFS + which was introduced by Apple in 1998. But technologies advance and the new SSDs allow to take advantage of improvements in security and operation.

This week we learned that the next version of iOS may incorporate the new APFS file system. Apparently, the system will be formatting our iOS devices while installing the latest version. And all this without losing current information.

With Macs it can be more complicated. Different elements interact with a Mac, and each one can have a different format. We are talking about USB sticks, external drives, Time Machine copies. Therefore, Apple has to work this time with the precision of a surgeon.

Apple File System for 2017

In any case, we are convinced that Apple is working on one of the things it does best: making tasks easy and simple, with little inconvenience or concern for the user.

Once they manage to implement the APFS system on Macs, we can take advantage of the improvements that this system will bring us.

  • APFS is much faster than the current system, taking advantage of the fact that it supports 64bits. Results have been obtained that improve the response time when executing processes. It is capable of managing much more information in less time.
  • One of the novelties that will be talked about the most will be technology «Crash Protection " that allows self-saving, gaining security and thus avoiding loss of information caused by an error due to loss of power.
  • It's safer, thanks to the new data encryption.
  • The data is located and does not duplicate files. Therefore, we gain space and efficiency.
  • However, if due to some incompatibility you do not want to use your entire disk in APFS, this format allows you to have partitions in other formats.

There are many other functions, but it is worth waiting to know in depth how this new system works, as well as the ability of developers to take advantage of this new system.

Updated: As a reader tells us, Apple unveiled the APFS file system at the last WWDC 2016 developer conference, here you can see the presentation in detail.

This topic gives me a bit of grimilla. What will happen to those of us who have a team with an SSD which did not come standard?

When apple unveiled APFS it said its features and functions, that in 2017 it would reach all its devices, and also how the process of safe upgrade from HFS + to APFS would be, even macOS Sierra has part of APFS and they give a demo. Here is the conference https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2016/701/
PS: I suggest you put the video or captures in the publication since it solves several questions or doubts that you mention.
