What to do if your Mac doesn't wake up from sleep

We return once more with a small tutorial to try to solve those little problems that we sometimes experience and that can make the user experience not entirely satisfactory. This is the case of reactivating the system when it comes from rest, which in many cases does not occur and the system will not respond to keystrokes or any other type of command. forcing the user to press and hold the power button to turn off the computer.

It seems that this problem occurs to a greater extent in iMac that have the latest versions of OS X Yosemite installed. Although when it goes to rest and is activated instantly it does so correctly, it is when it is left for a long period of time when it would start to give problems refusing to reactivate. In general, this type of problem suggests a power management problem or other configuration failure based on the computer's own hardware so supposedly should be easily solvable with the typical PRAM reset or of the SMC systemhowever this does not seem to work for this problem.

It seems that the problem lies in the hibernation management of the system, a low-power standby mode that keeps memory active to quickly resume the computer, this is done by the computer itself to avoid losing memory content and having to start over with all the work that we would have open. Unfortunately, it seems that some systems may have problems with hibernate mode, so if you see that your Mac is unable to wake up from sleep, then you should try these three possible solutions:

Disable system hibernation

To do this, we will open the terminal in Applications> Utilities> Terminal and enter these commands:

sudo pmset wait 0
sudo pmset AutoPowerOff 0

These commands will disable hardware settings that would otherwise put your Mac into hibernate mode. The first is Apple's main standby option and the second is an aNecessary application for European energy regulations. To reverse these commands, you can reset the Mac's System Management Controller (SMC), or rerun the commands, but use "1" as the value instead of "0".

Deactivate and reactivate FileVault

Writing and restoring the contents of disk memory can conflict with FileVault or other disk encryption routines. Technically, when the computer wakes up from hibernation the system must allow it to authenticate and then load the contents of the hibernation file, but if an error prevents this from happening, then the Mac can not being able to load said hibernation file and not reactivate.

To overcome hopefully this, we will first disable FileVault (this can take quite a while) to see if it works properly and then re-enable disk encryption and try again.

Remove the hibernation file from the system

A temporary solution until Apple releases a patch, would be to try to delete the hibernation file, a hidden file that is written to every time the Mac enters hibernation mode as it may be corrupted. At this point the system will recreate this file if it cannot find it, as a result we can fluff OS X to recreate it by removing it by running the following command in the terminal:

sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage

Once again we will enter the password when requested and thus see if the hibernation mode works correctly.

I am having just this problem on my mac mini. once it goes to sleep for more than a few hours then I can't get the peripherals to work (keyboard and trackpad) to enter the password. It leaves me no other option to shut down the system and turn it on again.

The problem is that I do not encourage myself to play from the terminal since I do not know anything about programming or anything like that ...

I have the same problem on a MacBook Pro, it freezes now that I am converting an iMovie video and I have no choice but to turn it off, but that is not the worst, but when I restart I have to type my password letter by letter since it is not the system slows down. It's bugging me, I've googled and can't find anything like it.

My mac does not start from sleep or when switching users.
I am forced to turn my computer off and on again.
It does so from the moment I have updated Mac OS High Sierra version 10.13.1

I have a similar problem, only that I do start the system, but after a few minutes it turns off as if it had no battery available, despite the fact that the indicator shows more than 30% normally.

When pressing the power button it turns OFF completely and when trying to restart it indicates that it has no battery (With the symbol on the black screen)

I connect the charger and it turns on without problem, and it starts everything, it usually tells me that there was an error when shutting down and that it can recover everything

When starting everything, you can see that the battery is charging, but it also indicates that it has more than 30 or 40% normally.

What do you suggest? or what will be happening?

Idle restarts the mac. I have updated to High Sierra 10.13.2 and since then when I put the mac to sleep when I activate it it puts a message that the computer has restarted and closes all the programs. There's a solution? All the best,

Someone help me please !!!

Thanks it worked well for me, when I changed the SSD I did not start with the problem, I followed your steps and rebooted, apparently until now the problem has been solved.
