Will Apple introduce a second iPhone SE next year?

iPhone-SE-Apple-Store

For more than a year, when we were still with the rumors of the iPhone 6s, something began to be said. It was said that Apple would introduce a new 4-inch model, with a design that could vary between the 5s or the 6. Bigger or less, with more battery and power or less. It would be a cheap and more affordable option for those who want an iPhone but are not willing to spend figures that exceed 500 or 600 dollars. Effectively, last March along with the 9,7-inch iPad Pro came the iPhone SE, priced at $ 399. The cheapest iPhone ever.

We are already beginning to talk about whether a second generation of this Special Edition will come out or if not. When could be. What design would it bring and if it is advisable to buy the 7 in that case. Below I will give my reasons why I do not think they will release a new iPhone SE, at least in 2017.

A special iPhone is supposed to be unique

As they said in the Pixar film The Incredibles: "If we are all special, then none of us are." This year we have seen a unique model that came to satisfy a specific audience. It was aimed at those who wanted to save and have a new iPhone. To those who still opted for the 5s design. To whom the 4 inches means comfort and not limitation, etc. This whole audience was delighted with the idea of them doing some kind of remake of the iPhone 5s adapting it with the power of the 6s and its rear camera. With its characteristics and its price, it turned out to be a very good terminal, and although we hardly talk about it anymore, it is still the most current option along with the iPhone 6s and 7.

The normal thing with Apple products is that each year they undergo some type of update, be it minor or major. With mobile devices we call it a new generation, and with Macs it is just one more update with better specifications or components. One way or another, I have every reason to think that there won't be an iPhone SE 2, least of all this year. I proceed to list and explain them below.

Why won't Apple release another iPhone SE?

  • Because this was a special model. It seems to me the most logical reason. If it is special, there cannot be a new one every year, and less by modifying the design, as this would increase the sale price.
  • No need. For the price, the iPhone SE is fine. I don't think they want to include anything new from the iPhone 7 in this model, so it would be stupid to update it. It is like what happens with the Air range of iPads, which are very similar to the Pro except for the pencil and the Smart Connector.
  • It would affect sales of the iPhone 2017 10th anniversary. I imagine that if they are going to equip it with incredible novelties and an innovative design, they will want to break records and achieve the success they had with the iPhone 6. By taking out a cheap model a few months before they could undermine the market and would find a problem when it comes to selling the next. That is why we would only see an iPhone presented in 2017. Of course, it would come in two size options that would differ in some characteristics.
  • The design of the iPhone 6 cannot fit 4 inches. It could be tried, but it would surely be a problem. Think about the battery and other elements, besides that it is a design that we are going to get tired of seeing very soon. It is already the third year that we have it. From iPhone 6 to 7 and 7 plus.

In conclusion. I don't think the cheap iPhone strategy is the best for Apple. If it comes in handy from time to time to try, but not every year. The iPhone SE has the potential to stay in the Apple Store until the end of 2017 and even after. Remember that the iPhone 5s continued to be sold until March.
